In this fun, high-energy production course, students will bring to life the world of Oz in an original play adaptation inspired by the universe of "Wicked" and "The Wizard of Oz"!
Note: this is not the musical, though some musical elements may be incorporated. Our play is focused on extending and paying tribute to the universe through storytelling, character, comedy, and theatrical creativity.
To get a sense of the tone of the play, please read the first scene here.
From Dorothy, Toto, Tinman and the Scarecrow to Elphaba, Glinda and the mysterious Wizard himself, there are roles to suit all performers, with plenty of opportunities for comedy, imagination, and collaboration.
This course is ideal for students aged 9–14 who love storytelling and performing, whether they are stepping on stage for the first time or building on previous theatre experience. Expect laughter, teamwork, and a magical journey to Munchkinland.
The Story
Wickedly Oz is a fast, funny return to Oz told by an unreliable narrator who insists everything is finally calm, until a brand-new school opens and a so-called expert from the human world is imported to run it. Enter Miss Gulch: the bicycle-riding, rule-obsessed meanie with a long memory, a sharp whistle, and unfinished business with a certain little dog.
As Gulch reshapes Oz into a joyless, over-regulated institution, the narrator’s version of events starts to crack, revealing that some villains do not arrive on broomsticks, they arrive with clipboards.
This production course is for Semester 1 2026 and will end in a theatre production at the Overture Hall, Weston (see all dates and venues below).

CASTING PROCESS
At the first class, performers will have an opportunity to take turns playing different roles in THIS SCENE. We will rotate so that everyone gets a turn, and everyone will be acting at the same time to take off the pressure. We will also run some team drama games and exercises.
Based on observations, after the class tutors will assign roles and email parents/guardians with the role assignment and complete script, ready to begin rehearsing at the second class.
To prepare, parents/guardians are asked to please:
- First enrol their child for the course at the bottom of this page.
- Then download the first scene here.
- Print the scene for their child and help them read through it.
- Practise reading lines with their child over the school holidays, with their child playing different roles (they do not need to learn the parts off by heart, but should practise performing on their feet with animation and expression - script in hand)
- Send them to the first lesson on 15th February with the printed scene script ready to show us their interpretation of the different characters!
